Assuming the picture of Mary Ellen Pleasant is a photograph, it is obvious to me as a master Chinese face reader (ancient branch of Chinese medicine) that this woman was indeed living under intense pressure and stress, at least when this picture was taken.

It's not certain this is a photo of Mary Ellen - it may have been Hawaii's Queen Emma, a contemporary of Mary Ellen's. But the photo is used so often AS Mary Ellen's that no matter what, she must have looked much like this.
