OMGosh!! Like reading Laura Ingalls Wilder ... only even better and more exciting!! And similar time frame in our history, out on the pioneer prairies. Well, earlier, actually. Laura wasn't born till 1867, I believe.

And Phoebe was already 17 in 1860? So had she already done all those things before she was even 17? Taught school after being engaged as tutor? Taught herself French... oh my. This is going to be an incredible book!! Sooo... who's going to write the screen play and make the film?? I LOVE IT... Already!! On to the next chapter...!! :D

Suz-an, that is the greatest compliment - I grew up on Ingalls Wilder, have read the books through about a hundred times! I HOPE I can keep this up at least through the 1890s, when Rose Wilder Lane will appear as a celebrated journalist in San Francisco!

Also, thank you for introducing all the characters in the first post. George Hearst giving her her own income and independence from the get-go! Who wouldn't fall in love with a man like that? Hope there'll be more about them.

I found that so amazing and inspiring, too. Phoebe became California's greatest philanthropist and had an incredible independent life because George recognized her as a powerful force in her own right. LOTS more about all of the Hearsts, but you will have to wait a while and get to know other characters before they actually arrive in San Francisco!

I'm meant to be starting a new Open University module next week and I discover THIS!! Time is going to get tight - delighted to read more of your writing, Alexandra. And I adore Craig's Grace too....I'm good at reading, not so efficient at writing reviews but I promise Craig I'll get there! (We met at Bloody Scotland - I dined with Craig and Yrsa, Karen, Susi and others, and chatted with you on some stairs somewhere. In a wheelchair now, thanks to a burglar - unlike the books I didn't whip his ass, he left me needing an airlift to Glasgow, but do hope to get back! In the meantime finally trying to get a degree. xxx)
