George Hearst's lifelong friendship with the young Mark Twain was forged in that great melting pot known as the Comstock. Technically located in Nevada, the Comstock was so inextricably tied to San Francisco’s financial and social life that it was called simply “Above” to San Francisco’s “Below.”
